Today though, he felt all hyped and even excited. The reason of all his sudden enthusiasm for life was sleeping next to him, curled up in a defensive ball, exhausted and still a little out of sorts with flu.

It reminded him so much of the good olden days, this picture. Not even of the happy days when he, Kate and Mary were his private little heaven. The memories the picture brought were deriving from somewhere much deeper. They weren't even memories, actually, just the sensations he remembered experiencing when he was about six or seven. He felt something akin to peace you only know in childhood, when your life is yet untouched by self-awareness, love interests, insecurity. When you're just happy another day has come.

 The first rational thought that shyly appeared in his mind was the question.

Why, why on Earth did she wish so desperately to be so thoroughly damned? She had never been frank enough with him about how she was taking it all. Not just Mary’s loss, but her entire set of life circumstances which made her into this guilt-ridden phantom of a woman.

It hasn’t been anything new to Sawyer to have to make his own assumptions about this, based on careless hints she sometimes made about her past, on her body language or on various implicit signs she gave out. He could always sense the same darkness in her he himself had in loads. The kind of darkness you’d never spill on another person, to say nothing about the one you love.

 His sleep was troubled and broken, constantly leaving him in a painful state in between dreams and reality. At first he couldn’t even sleep at all, for it suddenly dawned on him, how unbelievable it was that it was Freckles lying next to him. The mere fact of her presence, her sleeping curled up next to him seemed part of his interrupted dreams and he had a strange feeling that he could wake up any time, alone, and find it was all unreal. Every little thing of it – her thin body lying on her side, back to him, her hair splashed on his pillow, her unique scent he could inhale for the rest of his days and not get tired of it.
